News from Berlin - Germany has announced 10 million euros in aid for South Sudan to support hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese refugees who have been forced from their homes since violence broke out in December last year. German Minister for Economic Development and Cooperation Gerd Müller reported that the funds have been released to the United Nations’ World Food Program while on state trip to Juba, capital of South Sudan, last week. The funds will become available immediately to help support South Sudan’s refugees and internally displaced persons.

Minister Müller called for a peaceful resolution in South Sudan so that Germany can re-engage and recommence development projects in the region, which have been stopped in the midst of the conflict. Communicating through an interpreter, Müller addressed a news conference in Juba, assuring that Germany will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the almost half a million refugees and displaced South Sudanese who are sheltering in U.N. camps after fleeing their homes.

Müller implored the South Sudanese government to take steps to prevent the outbreak of future conflict so that citizens can focus on establishing the young country. Germany has previously given over 26 million euros in humanitarian aid to South Sudan from mid-2012 to June 2013.
