News from Berlin - Germany, as a multicultural country, has throughout modern times attracted young people from around the world to study at some of the world’s most preeminent universities. But after the Times released its 2014 World Rankings, German universities can also take pride in officially being among the best universities in the world.

The Times has for ten years annually published its prestigious ranking, which this year is bigger than ever before with more than 170 million people involved in higher education across the world. With the top of the list dominated by American and British universities, Germany is well placed with ten of its universities in the top 200. Furthermore, six German universities were included in the annual list of the Times’ top 100 universities under the age of 50, up from four last year. This emphasises a growing success and international recognition of the younger universities in Germany.

Highest ranked on the list is the LMU (Ludwig-Maxmilians-Universität München) as number 55 in the world, 11th in Europe and first in Germany. Second is FUB (Freie Universität Berlin) ranking number 86 in the world, 28th in Europe and fourth among German universities. Besides the honourable rankings among top universities of the world, German universities also rise in the reputation rankings. On this list Germany was the country with the third highest number of universities among the top 100 only behind America and Britain.

The growing success of the German universities is further highlighted by a quote from the Times’ Higher Education editor Phil Baty, stating that “Germany is enjoying really strong results in the Times Higher Education Rankings [which] demonstrates the growing stature of Germany’s universities”.
