News from Berlin – From June 23rd to 26th, the German Ambassador to Chile, Hans-Henning Blomeyer-Bartenstein, was on a tour in the Bío Bío province, in southern Chile. Accompanied by the Honorary Consul of the province, Christian Schmitz, the Ambassador met with several senior representatives from the political, academic and business sectors to identify new areas of cooperation.

On June 25th, Blomeyer-Bartenstein greeted the mayor of Concepción, Álvaro Ortiz Vera, who is at the helm of the second largest conurbation in Chile. Both men discussed on matters of governance and public-private partnerships. Subsequently, on the 26th, the Ambassador visited the Talcahuano Naval Base and some facilities of the ASMAR firm in company with the Commander of the Second Naval Zone, Rear Admiral Osvaldo Schwarzenberg Ashton.

During his stay at the Bío Bío Province, Blomeyer-Bartenstein held numerous meetings with academics. In his visit to the Concepción University, the Ambassador expressed his admiration for the undertaken reconstruction efforts after the university was left severely damaged by the earthquake that hit the country in February 2010.

Following the natural hazard, Germany gave 500 000 euros in loan to the faculty, which were to be invested in the purchase of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.

The university rector, Sergio Lavanchy, also praised the strong academic cooperation between Germany and Chile, which takes place as part of the German Academic Exchange Service.
