News from Berlin – The Cervantes Institute in Berlin will show two movie adaptations of the writings of Gabriel García Márquez. Both movies were directed by the Mexican movie director Arturo Ripstein. The first display will feature the film Time to Die – Tiempo de Morir- and will take place on July 14th at 20:00. The 1966 movie tells the tale of a man who returns from prison after 18 years. He spent his time behind bars for a murder and wishes to live quietly the rest of his life, but he finds himself sought after by the sons of his victim. The second movie will be displayed on July 21st at the same hour. It is a 1999 movie entitled No One Writes to the Colonel – El Coronel no Tiene Quien le Escriba. The movie featuring Salma Hayek presents the story of a retired officer whose expectations were betrayed by the country he had served. Both movies will be shown in Kino Babylon Mitte.

The movies come to not only honor the recently passed away Nobel Prize winner, but are also a statement of his passion for cinematography. According to the Cervantes Institute the famous writer always wanted to make movies. As a child he had been fascinated by the local cinema and later he wrote movie reviews for a newspaper from the Columbian capital. As a writer his books were largely adapted for the cinema, more than 50 times, although many times it proved difficult for the movie directors to comprise the writer’s rich imagination in a single movie.
