History

Burundi.jpg

Diplomatic relations between Burundi and Germany are amicable. After Burundi secured independence in 1962, the country became the first development cooperation partner of Germany which contributes significantly to African development. With regards to economic relations, the main pillar in bilateral trade between the two countries is based on Germany’s import of coffee.

Cultural relations have suffered severely since 1993 on account of the country’s civil war. Since 2012, there have also been tentative efforts to revive cultural cooperation. These include German Film Weeks in 2012 and 2013, donations of balls and jerseys for youth football teams, and tentative cooperation with the National Museum in Gitega in 2014.
