"Brigid meets Berlin“

Celebrating the Creativity of Women with the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin

Six of the most famous Irish women writers meet in Berlin to celebrate Irish Female Literary Creativity in Berlin. The Irish Embassy invites visitors to a two day celebration of St. Brigid’s Day this February 1st-2nd, 2019 St. Brigid or Brigid of Ireland is one of the Irish patron saints and many legends and folk customs are associated with her.

Although she shares her name with an important Celtic goddess, the early Irish Christian nun is recognized as the abbess and foundress of several monasteries of nuns.

In partnership with the Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin, the renowned women writers Sara Baume, Julia Kelly, Eimar McBride, Lisa McInerey, Audrey Magee, and Louise O’Neill will hold readings and participate in a panel discussion moderated by Stefanie Flamm (Die Zeit) and Deike Diening (Tagesspiegel). In addition to the debate, a creative writing seminar will take place. Lisa McInerey leads this workshop with writers that were selected after a preceding competition. Further, Sinéad Mac Aodha will hold a lecture on the promotion and representation of Irish women. Ms. Aodha is the director of Literature Ireland, and holds a degree in Modern languages as well as International Marketing.

On the opening event on February, 1st, 2019, Dr. Catherine Toal will speak on “Women Writing in Irish Literature.” She is a Professor of Literature and the Dean of the Faculty of Literature at Bard College Berlin and her focus is with the history of literary theory and nineteenth-, twentieth-century and contemporary literature.
