On the 10th of July, President Steinmeier and the First Lady Elke Büdenbender received the 7th intake of “AFRIKA KOMMT!”, an initiative to strengthen the perspective and relation between Germany and the African continent.

In a cheered ambiance the scholarship holders of the initiative “AFRIKA KOMMT!” were received by the President of Germany in Schloss Bellevue in Berlin. The scholarship holders are all from different countries of Africa. Among many other countries, Kenya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa were widely represented.

“AFRIKA KOMMT!” is not only an opportunity for many African students to come over to German and study, but as the President emphasized, it is equally a win for German because these students are equipped with knowledge and skills which will serve the German society as well.

Moreover, Steinmeier made clear that the initiative is also a way to showcase the move of Africa. Africa, so Steinmeier, is not what we used to claim it to be, no longer the picture of hunger and catastrophe, but a continent with great promises. Thus, with the initiative, as said in his speech, Germany wants to make the first step towards a real dialogue with Africa instead of reporting about Africa, which he firmly condemns as being of bias.

With congratulations and well-wishes, he concluded his speech.
